Hiking

Mauritius is well known for its tropical beaches; but why not adventure into the other side of the island : hiking, walking or even climbing inside the lands. Go and enjoy its beautiful and mountainous landscapes at the core of the island, its abundant exotic vegetation and exuberance of its fauna.

May to September are the best times to hike : they are the chilliest months and the vegetation is rich in colours.

The National Park of Black River Gorges

Situated on the south-west, it is best appreciated for its waterfalls and the broad expense of its primary forest. First park of the island, it opened its doors in June 1944 and has about 50km of path.

The nearest hotels are :
Les Pavillons
Le Paradis

Hotel with guide excursions around the island :

  Some advice of itinerary :
From Petrin to Black River

The itinerary that connects Petrin (at the junction of Grand Bassin and Curepipe-Chamarel roads) to Black River is magnificent. It will take an experienced hiker only 4 to 5 hours to climb. However, unless you are highly experienced, we recommend that you avoid it after a period of heavy rain due to the steep slopes.
From Petrin to the Tamarin Falls

An easy 3 hour itinerary followed by a very panoramic crest. Enjoy a pleasant detour to the seven waterfalls of Tamarin.
From Plaine Champagne to Bel Ombre

The 4 hour starting point is at Plaine Champagne's view point. The itinerary is easy. Just follow south towards Bel Ombre, passing a series of magnificent viewpoints on beautiful mixed forests and plantations.
Le Domaine du Chasseur and The Bambous Mountains

Splendid hills where some of them are crossed by pleasant roads. Le Domaine du Chasseur is a private place, where 4X4 vehicles can adapt comfortably. In the highlands, the forest and the coast views are fantastic...For additional details, see the Domaine du Chasseur section in "Your Visits"
Le Pouce

This mountain top rules Port Louis and Moka. Very easy to climb, it offers an excellent introduction to hiking in Mauritius. Apart from the necessary precaution at the peak of the hill, the climbing represents no danger and you will reach the top in 2 and a half hours. And there the pleasure is all yours, by observing the beautiful and amazing view...

Books dedicated to hiking in Mauritius :
Mountains of Mauritius : A climber's Guide, by Robert Marsh
27 detailed itinerary with extraordinary maps.

Climbing and Mountain Walking in Mauritius, by Alexander Ward.

The Tourist Office (MTPA) also offers various books on hiking.

The IGN map indicates a safe road for both hiking and 4X4's.
